Multiple integer overflows in the load_image function in file-pcx.c in the Personal Computer Exchange (PCX) plugin in GIMP 2.6.x and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted PCX image that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 06/06/2011 with Red Hat as Bug 689831 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1178. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75514 (openSUSE Security Update : gimp (openSUSE-SU-2011:0586-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
