Wireshark up to 1.6.1 Protocol Dissector proto_tree_add_item resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The proto_tree_add_item function in Wireshark 1.6.0 through 1.6.1 and 1.4.0 through 1.4.8, when the IKEv1 protocol dissector is used, allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via vectors involving a malformed IKE packet and many items in a tree.

The weakness was shared 08/23/2011 with NCNIPC (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3266. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80800 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : wireshark (denial_of_service_vulnerability_in)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120893 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2/2a Missing).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69411) and Tenable (80800). The entries 4442, 4456, 59432 and 59431 are related to this item.
