The weakness was shared 07/29/2012 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as [Uplay PC] Patch 2.0.4 - Security fix as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at forums.ubi.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4177 since 08/07/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1202 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by metasploit and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as highly functional.

Upgrading to version 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19227.
