The date-picker implementation in Google Chrome before 21.0.1180.57 on Mac OS X and Linux, and before 21.0.1180.60 on Windows and Chrome Frame, allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted web site.

The weakness was presented 07/31/2012 by Charmel De Silva (Trev) with Aspect Security as Stable Channel Release as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2860 since 05/19/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/27/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61505 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (ce84e136-e2f6-11e1-a8ca-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 21.0.1180.57 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
