Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 14 Graphite 2 Run memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 14 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function MediaStreamGraphThreadRunnable::Run in the library Graphite 2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) Graphite 2, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, Thunderbird before 15.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.12, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via vectors related to the (1) Silf::readClassMap and (2) Pass::readPass functions.

The weakness was shared 08/28/2012 by Christoph Diehl (vsemozhetbyt) with Mozilla as MFSA 2012-64 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3971 since 07/11/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/27/2021). Using the Address Sanitizer tool, Mozilla security researcher Christoph Diehl discovered two memory corruption issues involving the Graphite 2 library used in Mozilla products. Both of these issues can cause a potentially exploitable crash.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61741 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2b8cad90-f289-11e1-a215-14dae9ebcf89)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (61741). The entries 6036, 6035, 6039 and 6040 are related to this item.
