The weakness was disclosed 08/30/2012 by Nicolas Gregoire (miaubiz) with Google Security Team as stable-channel-update_30 as confirmed blog post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2866 since 05/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61744 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (ee68923d-f2f5-11e1-8014-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165389 (SUSE Security Update for Chromium: Update to 21.0.1180.88 (openSUSE-SU-2012:1215-1)).

Upgrading to version 21.0.1180.89 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78175) and Tenable (61744). The entries 6071, 6074, 6075 and 6076 are pretty similar.
