ImageMagick up to 6.5.3-5 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

ImageMagick 6.7.5-7 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and hang) via a crafted image whose IFD contains IOP tags that all reference the beginning of the IDF.

The weakness was published 06/05/2012 by Aleksis Kauppinen (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0248 since 12/21/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80752 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : quagga (cve_2012_1820_denial_of)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350671 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for ImageMagick: ALAS-2012-076).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12209.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73124) and Tenable (80752). Similar entries are available at 55529, 60903, 60901 and 60900.
