ImageMagick up to 6.5.x GetEXIFProperty memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.5.x (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function GetEXIFProperty. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The GetEXIFProperty function in magick/property.c in ImageMagick before 6.7.6-3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a zero value in the component count of an EXIF XResolution tag in a JPEG file, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was released 06/05/2012 by Joonas Kuorilehto (Codenomicon) with Codenomicon CROSS Project as Bug CVE-201 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0259 since 12/21/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80643 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : imagemagick (multiple_vulnerabilities_in_imagemagick2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350671 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for ImageMagick: ALAS-2012-076).

Upgrading to version 6.5.3-5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74657) and Tenable (80643). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 13218, 67522, 55529 and 56096.
