ModSecurity up to 2.5.10 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ModSecurity. Affected is an unknown code block of the component ModSecurity. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

ModSecurity before 2.5.11 treats request parameter values containing single quotes as files, which allows remote attackers to bypass filtering rules and perform other attacks such as cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a single quote in a request parameter in the Content-Disposition field of a request with a multipart/form-data Content-Type header.

The weakness was shared 07/22/2012 by malware with Qualys (Website). The advisory is available at modsecurity.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-5031 since 12/09/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75112 (openSUSE Security Update : apache2-mod_security2 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1336-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166401 (OpenSuSE Security Update for apache2-mod_security2 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1342-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.5.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76518) and Tenable (75112). The entries 6798, 8160, 8314 and 8904 are related to this item.
