A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Dave Mandelin with Mozilla as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0683 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62357 (Apple TV < 5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).

Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative.
