389 Directory Server up to 1.2.7 do_search access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in 389 Directory Server up to 1.2.7 (Directory Service Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function do_search. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The do_search function in ldap/servers/slapd/search.c in 389 Directory Server 1.2.x before 1.2.11.20 and 1.3.x before 1.3.0.5 does not properly restrict access to entries when the nsslapd-allow-anonymous-access configuration is set to rootdse and the BASE search scope is used, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information outside of the rootDSE via a crafted LDAP search.

The weakness was presented 05/13/2013 by Martin with Red Hat as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.fedorahosted.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1897 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69743 (Amazon Linux AMI : 389-ds-base (ALAS-2013-184)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.2.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.fedorahosted.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83598), Tenable (69743), SecurityFocus (BID 59026†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39271†). See VDB-124587 for similar entry.
