The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as confirmed posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3648 since 06/19/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/14/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62216 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
