A vulnerability was found in Exim Internet Mailer up to 4.32 (Mail Server Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function header_syntax
of the component Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in Exim 3.35, and other versions before 4, when the sender_verify option is true, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code during sender verification.
The bug was discovered 05/06/2004. The weakness was disclosed 05/06/2004 by Georgi Guninski (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at guninski.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0399 since 04/13/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at guninski.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15339 (Debian DSA-502-1 : exim-tls - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74148 (Exim Multiple Remote Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at exim.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15574. In this case the pattern MAIL
is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3499.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16079) and Tenable (15339). securityfocus.com is providing further details. The entry 646 is pretty similar.
