The weakness was disclosed 06/30/2014 by Steve Dunham with Zero Day Initiative as HT6296 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1378 since 01/08/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76317 (Mac OS X 10.9.x < 10.9.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122214 (Apple Mac OS X v10.9.4 Not Installed (HT6281, HT203015)).

Upgrading to version 10.9.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
