Splunk 5.0/5.0.1/5.0.2/5.0.3/5.0.4 collect Bugtraq file path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Splunk 5.0/5.0.1/5.0.2/5.0.3/5.0.4 (Log Management Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Bugtraq of the file collect. The manipulation of the argument file with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was shared 04/03/2014 by Gerhard Muntingh with CyberCrown Ltd as SP-CAAAH76 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at splunk.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-6771 since 11/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 52 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70213 (Splunk < 5.0.5 Multiple Code Execution Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12771 (Splunk Multiple Command Execution Vulnerabilities (SP-CAAAH76)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at splunk.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13977.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95417), Tenable (70213), SecurityFocus (BID 62632†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41879†). Additional details are provided at zerodayinitiative.com. The entries VDB-10483 and VDB-67376 are related to this item.
