Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 5 EL6 /var/cache/jboss-ec2-eap access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

EC2 Amazon Machine Image (AMI) in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) 5.1.2 uses 755 permissions for /var/cache/jboss-ec2-eap/, which allows local users to read sensitive information such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) credentials by reading files in the directory.

The weakness was shared 10/16/2012 by Aleksandar Kostadinov with Red Hat as RHSA-2012:1376-1 as not defined advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3427 since 06/14/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. This may allow a local attacker to gain access to potentially sensitive Amazon Web Service (AWS) credentials. This flaw only affected the EC2 AMI for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 5.1.2.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64058 (RHEL 6 : jboss-ec2-eap (RHSA-2012:1376)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Applying the patch jboss-ec2-eap-5.1.2-8.11.ep5.el6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at rhn.redhat.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Before applying this update, back up your JBoss Enterprise Application Platform's server/[PROFILE]/deploy/ directory, along with all other customized configuration files.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79398) and Tenable (64058). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com.
