EC2 Amazon Machine Image (AMI) in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) 5.1.2 uses 755 permissions for /var/cache/jboss-ec2-eap/, which allows local users to read sensitive information such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) credentials by reading files in the directory.
The weakness was shared 10/16/2012 by Aleksandar Kostadinov with Red Hat as RHSA-2012:1376-1 as not defined advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3427 since 06/14/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. This may allow a local attacker to gain access to potentially sensitive Amazon Web Service (AWS) credentials. This flaw only affected the EC2 AMI for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 5.1.2.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64058 (RHEL 6 : jboss-ec2-eap (RHSA-2012:1376)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.
Applying the patch jboss-ec2-eap-5.1.2-8.11.ep5.el6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at rhn.redhat.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Before applying this update, back up your JBoss Enterprise Application Platform's server/[PROFILE]/deploy/ directory, along with all other customized configuration files.
