Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.3 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in QuickTime in Apple OS X before 10.10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted audio samples in an m4a file.

The weakness was published 10/16/2014 by Karl Smith with NCC Group as HT6535 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-4351 since 06/20/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

Playing a maliciously crafted m4a file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78550 (Mac OS X < 10.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE) (Shellshock)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122785 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT6493)).

Upgrading to version 10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed through improved bounds checking.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97626) and Tenable (78550). Similar entries are available at 10344, 67237, 67593 and 67592.
