A vulnerability was found in KDE Konqueror 4.7.3 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function scaleLoop
of the file khtml/imload/scaledimageplane.h of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with the input value canvas.width = 111111
leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
khtml/imload/scaledimageplane.h in Konqueror in KDE 4.7.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly read memory via large canvas dimensions, which leads to an unexpected sign extension and a heap-based buffer over-read.
The weakness was disclosed 10/10/2012 by Tim Brown with Nth Dimension as NDSA20121010 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at nth-dimension.org.uk. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with KDE. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4513 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. According to KDE, in the case of 64-bit systems this appeared only to allow a crash to be triggered however on 32-bit systems it could lead to memory disclosure.
A public exploit has been developed by Tim Brown in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at nth-dimension.org.uk. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 97 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62764 (CentOS 6 : kdelibs (CESA-2012:1418)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166215 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for kdelibs4 (SUSE-SU-2013:1559-1)). There are apparently issues in reproducing this vulnerability.
Applying the patch Revision 1f8b1b03 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at projects.kde.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (62764) and Exploit-DB (22406). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entries 6848, 6849, 6851 and 52161 are pretty similar.
