Drupal up to 6.32/7.30 XRDS Document DOCTYPE access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Drupal up to 6.32/7.30 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component XRDS Document Handler. The manipulation of the argument DOCTYPE with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was shared 08/06/2014 by Willis Vandevanter and Nir Goldshlager as SA-CORE-2014-004 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at drupal.org. The advisory contains:

In addition, a similar vulnerability exists in the core OpenID module (for sites that have this module enabled).
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-5267 since 08/15/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 include an XML-RPC endpoint which is publicly available (xmlrpc.php). The PHP XML parser used by this XML-RPC endpoint is vulnerable to an XML entity expansion attack and other related XML payload attacks which can cause CPU and memory exhaustion and the site's database to reach the maximum number of open connections. Any of these may lead to the site becoming unavailable or unresponsive (denial of service).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77100 (Debian DSA-2999-1 : drupal7 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122561 (Fedora Security Update for drupal7 (FEDORA-2014-9278)). The advisory illustrates:

All Drupal sites are vulnerable to this attack whether XML-RPC is used or not.

Upgrading to version 6.33 or 7.31 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.drupalcode.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99846) and Tenable (77100). Additional details are provided at openwall.com. The entries 67381 and 67382 are related to this item.
