Apple iOS up to 8.1.2 WebKit input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
6.2$5k-$25k0.00

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple iOS up to 8.1.2 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

WebKit in Apple Safari before 6.2.1, 7.x before 7.1.1, and 8.x before 8.0.1 allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy via crafted Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) token sequences within an SVG file in the SRC attribute of an IMG element.

The weakness was released 01/27/2015 by Rennie deGraaf with iSEC Partners as HT204245 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4465. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/07/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:

An SVG loaded in an img element could load a CSS file cross-origin. This issue was addressed through enhanced blocking of external CSS references in SVGs.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80055 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.2.2 / 7.1.2 / 8.0.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123027 (Apple Safari 6.2.1/ 7.1.1/8.0.1 Not Installed (HT6596)).

Upgrading to version 8.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (80055), SecurityFocus (BID 71439†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48294†). Additional details are provided at us-cert.gov.
