A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.3 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component MP4 File Handler. Buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted rnet box in an MP4 movie file.
The bug was discovered 11/07/2012. The weakness was disclosed 11/07/2012 by Kevin Szkudlapski (CHkr_D591) with QUARKSLAB as HT5581 as confirmed advisory (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3756 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65577 (Mac OS X 10.8.x < 10.8.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121020 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.3 and Security Update 2013-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-03-14-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12744.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79903) and Tenable (65577). The entries 6855, 6899, 6900 and 6901 are pretty similar.
