A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 16.0.1/16.0.2 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function str_unescape
of the component JavaScript Handler. The manipulation with the input value "0%u0000".substr(0,2)
leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The str_unescape function in the JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Thunderbird before 17.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 11/20/2012 by Scott Bell (moz_bug_r_a4) with Security-Assessment.com as MFSA 2012-96 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4204 since 08/08/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Scott Bell in Javascript and been published 1 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at security-assessment.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62979 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d23119df-335d-11e2-b64c-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165846 (SUSE Security Update to Firefox 17.0 and other Mozilla (openSUSE-SU-2013:0175-1)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
