The My Home implementation in the block_html_pluginfile function in blocks/html/lib.php in Moodle through 2.3.11, 2.4.x before 2.4.10, 2.5.x before 2.5.6, and 2.6.x before 2.6.3 does not properly restrict file access, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by visiting an HTML block.

The weakness was disclosed 05/26/2014 (Website). The advisory is available at moodle.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0216 since 12/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/22/2022). This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

By approaching the search of inurl:blocks/html/lib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74237 (Fedora 19 : moodle-2.4.10-1.fc19 (2014-6577)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12953 (Moodle Multiple Security Vulnerabilities (MSA-14-0014 - MSA-14-0017 , MSA-14-0019)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
