A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Data Dumper up to 2.151. Affected is the function Data::Dumper
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The Dumper method in Data::Dumper before 2.154, as used in Perl 5.20.1 and earlier, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption and crash) via an Array-Reference with many nested Array-References, which triggers a large number of recursive calls to the DD_dump function.
The weakness was shared 09/30/2014 by Markus Vervier with LSE Leading Security Experts (Website). The advisory is available at lsexperts.de. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-4330 since 06/18/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78094 (Fedora 19 : perl-Data-Dumper-2.154-1.fc19 (2014-11428)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196417 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Perl Vulnerabilities (USN-2916-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
