getmail up to 4.21.0 X.509 Certificate cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in getmail up to 4.21.0. It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the component X.509 Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IMAP-over-SSL implementation in getmail 4.0.0 through 4.43.0 does not verify X.509 certificates from SSL servers, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof IMAP servers and obtain sensitive information via a crafted certificate.

The weakness was released 10/07/2014 by mancha (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-7273 since 10/01/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79805 (Debian DSA-3091-1 : getmail4 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167295 (OpenSuSE Security Update for getmail (openSUSE-SU-2014:1315-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
