getmail up to 4.21.0 X.509 Certificate cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in getmail up to 4.21.0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component X.509 Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The POP3-over-SSL implementation in getmail 4.0.0 through 4.44.0 does not verify X.509 certificates from SSL servers, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof POP3 servers and obtain sensitive information via a crafted certificate.

The weakness was presented 10/07/2014 by mancha (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-7275 since 10/01/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79805 (Debian DSA-3091-1 : getmail4 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167295 (OpenSuSE Security Update for getmail (openSUSE-SU-2014:1315-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96896) and Tenable (79805). See 71872 and 71871 for similar entries.
