Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 IOHIDFamily null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

IOHIDFamily in Apple iOS before 8 and Apple TV before 7 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via an application that provides crafted key-mapping properties.

The weakness was released 04/08/2015 by Ian Beer (evad3rs) with Google Project Zero as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-4405 since 06/20/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

A malicious application may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77822 (Apple TV < 7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc..

Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96109) and Tenable (77822). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 67368, 67370, 67371 and 67372.
