MediaWiki 1.24.x before 1.24.2, when using PBKDF2 for password hashing, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a long password.

The weakness was presented 03/31/2015 by Bawolff with iSEC Partners (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-2936 since 04/07/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82686 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : mediawiki (MDVSA-2015:200)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.
