The issue has been introduced in 06/26/2013. The weakness was presented 04/14/2015 with Microsoft as MS15-032 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-1662 since 02/17/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 657 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82770 (MS15-032: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (3038314)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100229 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-032)).

Applying the patch MS15-032 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19701.
