A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox 37.x (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function nsThreadManager::RegisterCurrentThread of the component Shutdown Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was published 05/12/2015 by Tyson Smith and Jesse Schwartzentruber (laf.intel) with MIT as MFSA 2015-53 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2715 since 03/25/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83389 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d9b43004-f5fd-4807-b1d7-dbf66455b244)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167833 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:0934-1)).

Upgrading to version 38 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
