A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome up to 43.0.2357.134 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component PDFium. PDFium, as used in Google Chrome before 44.0.2403.89, does not properly handle certain out-of-memory conditions, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted PDF document that triggers a large memory allocation.

The weakness was disclosed 07/23/2015 by Chamal De Silva (Cloudfuzzer) with Baidu X-Team as Stable Channel Update, July 2015 as confirmed release notes (Blog). The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-1271 since 01/21/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 06/03/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84992 (Debian DSA-3315-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167983 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Chromium (openSUSE-SU-2015:1287-1)).

Upgrading to version 44.0.2403.89 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
