FFmpeg up to 2.5.3 JPEG-LS Start of Frame Segment libavcodec/mjpegdec.c ff_mjpeg_decode_sof memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in FFmpeg up to 2.5.3 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function ff_mjpeg_decode_sof of the file libavcodec/mjpegdec.c of the component JPEG-LS Start of Frame Segment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ff_mjpeg_decode_sof function in libavcodec/mjpegdec.c in FFmpeg before 2.5.4 does not validate the number of components in a JPEG-LS Start Of Frame segment, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted Motion JPEG data.

The weakness was disclosed 07/26/2015 by Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1872 since 02/17/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83939 (FreeBSD : avidemux26 -- multiple vulnerabilities in bundled FFmpeg (022255be-0895-11e5-a242-5404a68ad561)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176766 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1740-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (83939). The entries 68532, 68975, 73166 and 106026 are pretty similar.
