A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in FFmpeg up to 2.5.3 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function ff_mjpeg_decode_sof
of the file libavcodec/mjpegdec.c of the component JPEG-LS Start of Frame Segment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ff_mjpeg_decode_sof function in libavcodec/mjpegdec.c in FFmpeg before 2.5.4 does not validate the number of components in a JPEG-LS Start Of Frame segment, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted Motion JPEG data.
The weakness was disclosed 07/26/2015 by Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1872 since 02/17/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
