A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.3.8 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function _skb_recv_datagram
of the file net/core/datagram.c of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The __skb_recv_datagram function in net/core/datagram.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8 does not properly handle the MSG_PEEK flag with zero-length data, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and system hang) via a crafted application.
The weakness was presented 02/14/2013 by Tommi Rantala (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0290 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75016 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2013:0951-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166012 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2013:0951-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82096) and Tenable (75016). See 8744 for similar entry.
