Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in thumb.php in MediaWiki before 1.23.10, 1.24.x before 1.24.3, and 1.25.x before 1.25.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the rel404 parameter, which is not properly handled in an error page.

The weakness was released 09/01/2015 by Rick (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-6729 since 08/27/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85698 (Fedora 23 : mediawiki-1.25.2-2.fc23 (2015-13920)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.23.10, 1.24.3 or 1.25.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
