A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3/2010 SP2/2011/2016 (Spreadsheet Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Office Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3, Excel 2010 SP2, Excel for Mac 2011 and 2016, Office Compatibility Pack SP3, and Excel Viewer allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document, aka "Microsoft Office Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 09/08/2015 by Steven Vittitoe with Google Project Zero as MS15-099 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-2520 since 03/19/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85878 (MS15-099: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3089664) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110259 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-099)).
Applying the patch MS15-099 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21012.
