A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3/2010 SP2 (Spreadsheet Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Office Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The weakness was disclosed 09/08/2015 by Steven Vittitoe with Google Project Zero as MS15-099 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2521 since 03/19/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85879 (MS15-099: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3089664)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110259 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-099)).

Applying the patch MS15-099 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21013.
