The processor_set_tasks API implementation in Apple iOS before 9 allows local users to bypass an entitlement protection mechanism and obtain access to the task ports of arbitrary processes by leveraging root privileges.
The weakness was published 09/23/2015 by Filippo Bigarella (beist) as HT205213 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5882 since 08/06/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An issue existed where root processes using the processor_set_tasks API were allowed to retrieve the task ports of other processes. This issue was addressed through added entitlement checks.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
