Apple Watch up to 1.0.2 Kernel input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Watch up to 1.0.2 (Smartwatch Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The Neighbor Discovery (ND) protocol implementation in the IPv6 stack in Apple iOS before 9 allows remote attackers to reconfigure a hop-limit setting via a small hop_limit value in a Router Advertisement (RA) message.

The weakness was released 09/23/2015 by Dennis Spindel Ljungmark as HT205213 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5869 since 08/06/2015. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

An insufficient validation issue existed in handling of IPv6 router advertisements that allowed an attacker to set the hop limit to an arbitrary value. This issue was addressed by enforcing a minimum hop limit.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).

Upgrading to version 2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 76764†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53152†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-9015, VDB-68413, VDB-77828 and VDB-77762. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
