A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9/10/11 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function RegExpBase::FBadHeader of the component VBScript/JScript Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The Microsoft (1) VBScript 5.7 and 5.8 and (2) JScript 5.7 and 5.8 engines, as used in Internet Explorer 8 through 11 and other products, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted replace operation with a JavaScript regular expression, aka "Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 10/13/2015 by SkyLined with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-108 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2482 since 03/19/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86367 (MS15-106: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (3096441)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100259 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-106)).

Applying the patch MS15-108 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21198.
