FFmpeg up to 2.8.1 JPEG 2000 Data libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c init_tile coordinate input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in FFmpeg up to 2.8.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). This affects the function init_tile of the file libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c of the component JPEG 2000 Data Handler. The manipulation of the argument coordinate with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The init_tile function in libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c in FFmpeg before 2.8.2 does not enforce minimum-value and maximum-value constraints on tile coordinates, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted JPEG 2000 data.

The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2015 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-8219 since 11/16/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87178 (FreeBSD : ffmpeg -- multiple vulnerabilities (b0da85af-21a3-4c15-a137-fe9e4bc86002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168244 (OpenSuSE Security Update for ffmpeg (openSUSE-SU-2015:2120-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (87178). The entries 79224, 79225, 79226 and 79341 are pretty similar.
