A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8zg/1.0.0s/1.0.1p/1.0.2d (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component X509_ATTRIBUTE Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 12/03/2015 by Adam Langley with Google as 20151203.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-3195 since 04/10/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:
When presented with a malformed X509_ATTRIBUTE structure OpenSSL will leak memory. This structure is used by the PKCS#7 and CMS routines so any application which reads PKCS#7 or CMS data from untrusted sources is affected. SSL/TLS is not affected.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 24 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87340 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2015-614)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168857 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libressl (openSUSE-SU-2016:1327-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zh, 1.0.0t, 1.0.1q or 1.0.2e eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (108504) and Tenable (87340). The entries 76354, 78584, 78603 and 78601 are pretty similar.
