FFmpeg up to 1.1.3 iff.c msrle_decode_8_16_24_32 File numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 1.1.3 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function msrle_decode_8_16_24_32 in the library libavformat of the file iff.c. The manipulation with the input value CMAP Chunk leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The iff_read_header function in iff.c in libavformat in FFmpeg through 1.1.3 does not properly handle data sizes for Interchange File Format (IFF) data during operations involving a CMAP chunk or a video codec, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (integer overflow, out-of-bounds array access, and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted header.

The weakness was disclosed 03/04/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as SA52594 as not defined advisory (Secunia). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2495 since 03/07/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/06/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65819 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 : libav vulnerabilities (USN-1790-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 9.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82783) and Tenable (65819). The entries 7789, 7981 and 63650 are pretty similar.
