A vulnerability was found in Prosody up to 0.9.8 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component mod_dialback. The mod_dialback module in Prosody before 0.9.9 does not properly generate random values for the secret token for server-to-server dialback authentication, which makes it easier for attackers to spoof servers via a brute force attack.

The weakness was shared 01/12/2016 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). The advisory is shared for download at blog.prosody.im. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1232 since 12/27/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87975 (Debian DLA-391-1 : prosody security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124593 (Fedora Security Update for prosody (FEDORA-2016-e289f41b76)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
