The mod_dialback module in Prosody before 0.9.9 does not properly generate random values for the secret token for server-to-server dialback authentication, which makes it easier for attackers to spoof servers via a brute force attack.
The weakness was shared 01/12/2016 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). The advisory is shared for download at blog.prosody.im. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1232 since 12/27/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.

Upgrading to version 0.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
