Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Outlook Web Access (OWA) in Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted URL, aka "Exchange Spoofing Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-0029.
The weakness was presented 01/12/2016 by Nirmal Kirubakaran as MS16-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-0031 since 12/04/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87895 (MS16-010: Security Update in Microsoft Exchange Server to Address Spoofing (3124557)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 53002 (Microsoft Exchange Server Address Spoofing Vulnerabilities (MS16-010)).
Applying the patch MS16-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
