Apple iOS up to 9.2.0 libxslt type confusion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple iOS up to 9.2.0 (Smartphone Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component libxslt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The xsltStylePreCompute function in preproc.c in libxslt 1.1.28 does not check if the parent node is an element, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted XML file, related to a "type confusion" issue.

The weakness was shared 01/19/2016 by Liang Chen (puzzor) with Zero Day Initiative as HT205732 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7995 since 10/28/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 07/03/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:

A type confusion issue existed in libxslt. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88418 (Apple TV < 9.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124584 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.3 and Security Update 2016-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-01-19-2)).

Upgrading to version 9.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (88418). The entries 79234, 80331, 80332 and 80333 are related to this item.
