The Downloads feature in Apple Safari before 9.1 mishandles file expansion, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted web site.

The weakness was released 03/18/2016 by Russ Cox (WoofWagly) with n.runs AG as HT206171 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1771 since 01/13/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

An insufficient input validation issue existed in the handling of certain files. This was addressed through additional checks during file expansion.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124837 (Apple Safari 9.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-6)).

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
