Linux Kernel up to 3.8.5 VPD Firmware Parser tg3.c tg3_read_vpd memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function tg3_read_vpd of the file /drivers/net/ethernet/broadcom/tg3.c of the component VPD Firmware Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the tg3_read_vpd function in drivers/net/ethernet/broadcom/tg3.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.6 allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted firmware that specifies a long string in the Vital Product Data (VPD) data structure.

The weakness was released 03/07/2013 by Oded Horovitz with PrivateCore as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1929 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66588 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-quantal vulnerabilities (USN-1834-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350544 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-200).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (66588). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 7108, 7839, 7840 and 8485.
