with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The weakness was shared 04/05/2013 by Michael Scherer as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1938 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:src/php/aspell.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72670 (Zimbra Collaboration Server aspell.php dictionary Parameter XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
