Buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted FPX file.
The weakness was presented 05/22/2013 by G. Geshev with Zero Day Initiative as HT5770 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0988 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66808 (Mac OS X 10.8.x < 10.8.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121226 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and Security Update 2013-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-06-04-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
