Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file show_archive.php. The manipulation of the argument archive with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in (1) show_archives.php, (2) show_news.php, and possibly other php files in CuteNews 1.3.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary script or HTML via the id parameter.

The weakness was shared 08/16/2004 by Debasis Mohanty (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0660 since 07/12/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14318 (CuteNews show_archives.php archive Parameter XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12094 (CutePHP CuteNews Comment HTML XSS Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
